Otaku-High Ultimate Trivia Tour

Need more information about the Otaku game show appearing at your local convention? You're in the right place!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is It?

Otaku-High Ultimate Trivia Tour is a game show-type panel that allows anime fans to compete for convention tickets and lots of Otaku swag just by answering trivia questions about a wide variety of anime. The best part is that each contestant gets to pick their own categories - allowing them to avoid series that they may not know very well and focus in on the subjects at which their better. The game show is being run at several conventions throughout 2008 and will also be around in 2009!

Who Can Compete?

Anyone!

As long as you know your anime trivia, you should be good to go!

Is There An Age Restriction?

No!

This panel is designed to be appropriate for all ages.

Eventually, however, we are going to record the game show and, if you're not over the age of 18, you won't be shown. All contestants will have to sign a video release form. Don't worry, we aren't doing anything strange with it. . . we're just using it to help us make previews and advertise for the panel.

What Anime Titles Are You Asking Questions From?

Anything released/licensed in the United States.

You should be glad about that too! It greatly limits the number of series that we can use. Also, if you're not familiar with the series, you should be able to find it on store shelves or libraries so that you can watch it without doing anything illegal. A lot of information about these titles can also be found in US-Published magazines and on retailer's websites. So, the information is readily avaliable to everyone - with our without Internet access.

How Long Does The Panel Last?

Right now, we're requesting anywhere between 1 1/2 - 2 hours to run the event. Last time we hosted the panel, we only had 1 hour and it was not enough time.

What Are You Giving As Prizes?

Currently, we're offering tickets to EXP Con as prizes in addition to lots of Otaku Swag. At Florida Supercon, we gave out tickets to Ancient City Con to the winners and among the Otaku swag were tin lunch boxes (Excel Saga and Noir), CDs (Lain - remixes and NGE - Refrain), snacks, Pocky, Death Note pins, FMA keychain, Bleach figures, and lots of posters.

What Conventions Are You Running The Game Show At?

Metrocon, AFO (still waiting on a response from them), EXP Con, Ancient City Con, and hopefully Anime Supercon and Anime South.

How Should I Prepare?

Honestly, just watch a lot of anime and pay close attention to details.

Are You Guys Just Picking From Anime You Like, Only Obscur Anime, Or Just Mainstream Anime?

No.

We've been really careful to get a wide-range of anime titles. We have old, new, popular, unpopular, funny, dramatic, action, sci-fi. . . you get the idea. Since all the categories are "genre" based (for the most part), we've tried to find an even number of questions from a wide variety within that genre also. Even when we sort out which questions to use where and at what level of difficulty, we take into consideration how long ago it was originally released, whether it's frequently featured in magazines and previews, whether it's extremely popular at conventions. . . you get the idea (again). In other words, we're trying to keep the most recent or popular releases in the lower levels and the more obscure series for the difficult rounds. Although, popular series do show up at levels 5 and 6, the questions are pretty difficult.

I See You Have A Cosplay Bonus Round, What Can I Do?

Well, if you can't do it at the convention, then you can't do it in our panel. There's no throwing (humans or objects) or swearing allowed. Also, you won't be able to use any of your own props or weapons - they'd have to stay at your seat. We have our own props for you to use.

Basically, you get to pick the character you want to cosplay and, as long as our "Otaku Judges" know who that character is, then you're good to go. If not, you'd have to pick a different character. Then, you randomly choose a prompt out of a hat. You have about 15-30 seconds to collect your thoughts, dig through the props and start cosplaying. You have to interact with at least 3 props. Then, our Otaku Judges give you a score (scale of 1-5 points) and we take the average of their scores and add it to your total points.

Keep in mind that the skit has to be short. Also, not everyone gets to participate. You have to get the Period 4 question right in order to qualify.

How Do I Get Selected To Become A Student At Otaku-High?

When you show up for the panel, our Otaku Judges will be handing out "Entrance Exams". All you have to do is answer the questions to the best of your knowledge. When we're all set up and ready to go, we'll ask you to turn in the test. We'll take a second to grade it while some anime previews play and then start selecting students based on their scores. Do your best!

How Many Contestants Are You Going To Have?

It just depends on how well everyone answers their questions. We need at least 5 people to get past level 4. We only allow 3 people to progress to the Super Extra Charged Final Battle GO! round. By that point, all 3 of them are walking away with prizes, they're just competing for which level prize they get.

How Can I Become An Otaku Judge?

If you'd like to help us run the panel as an Otaku Judge, just email us! Remember, if you're helping is run the event, you will not be able to compete for prizes at that convention. It does not, however, disqualify you from competing at other conventions. We'd prefer at lest one or two cosplayers to make the show more interactive. ^_^ However, like contestants, you guys have entrance exam too. You'd need to be able to of course attend the convention and be avaliable 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the panel. You don't have to help us set up anything or pack anything up. We just need you to be there early to go over your role in the panel one last time and to be there a little after it ends for pictures. You will get some kind of small compensation. . .
